Downy Woodpecker

Downy HouseDowny Woodpecker

The smallest of the woodpecker family, downy woodpeckers are black and white all over with the exception of a red patch on the back of the male's neck. They are also the most prominent participants in the noisy activity of drumming their bills. This is used as a substitute for singing. It is used to signify territory, chase intruders, and in courtship. A slow tapping is used by a mating pair for keeping in touch with each other. The downy woodpecker's food consists of woodboring insects, grubs, ants, beetles, berries, nuts and seeds.
This house is handmade with weather and insect resistant western red cedar. Almost all of the screws are stainless steel. These are used for their durable and rust-free nature. The one exception is a specially coated screw located at the bottom center of the front. This piece is used for ease in removal to clean and mount the birdhouse. Other features incorporated into this box are: vents, for good air circulation; a drain hole, in case water gets inside; and a rough "ladder" for the fledglings to use to climb out.

Redheaded Woodpecker

Red headed WoodpeckerRed Headed Woodpecker House

This particular house is built to accommodate redheaded or redbellied woodpeckers. Redheaded woodpeckers are often aggressive toward other speicies and are opportunists in their feeding habits. They spend most of their time flycatching from exposed perches. Their diet varies from insects, worms, mice, nuts, berries, and corn. Some even find food in tree bark. In the winter they frequent bird feeders. Despite their bold character, these birds have been declining. Heavy competition from starlings and other cavity nesters, in combination with the removal of dead or dying trees, has reduced this woodpecker's population.
The redbellied woodpecker spends most of its time hammering on tree trunks, either in search of wood boring insects or to communicate with others. Its nostrils are covered by a mask of fine bristly feathers in order to keep it from breathing wood dust. Other attributes are a strong neck, thick skull, and a cushioning space between the brain and skull. This protects the bird from any brain damage that would occur from all the hammering it does in search of food. Its most spectacular feature is a long cylindrical tounge, hard enough to spear insects. Its gluey saliva is great for lapping up ants.
