Owls
Screech
The screech
owl is the smallest of the four owl species that live in Florida. They occur
in two distinct color phases, red and gray-brown. These differences in plumage
seem to have no rhyme or reason. It is not related to age, sex, or season.
In fact, both reds and grays can be found in the same brood. Their diet is
also varied, ranging from mice and rats to insects, worms, snakes, and snails.
Sometimes they catch insects mid-flight. They are also talented anglers, plunging
into streams to catch fish and crayfish. These small owls will readily use
appropriate nest boxes and enjoy nightly visits to backyard birdbaths.
This house is handmade
with weather and insect resistant western red cedar. Almost all of the screws
are stainless steel. These are used for their durable and rust-free nature.
The one exception is a specially coated screw located at the bottom center
of the front. This piece is used for ease in removal to clean and mount the
birdhouse. Other features incorporated into this box are: vents, for good
air circulation; a drain hole, in case water gets inside; and a rough "ladder" for
the fledglings to use to climb out.

This box
is made to accommodate either the barn or barred owl. Both are year round
residents of Florida. The barn is more tolerable of human presence than most
owls. This is demonstrated by a very broad range. They have been found living
in North and South America, across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The
barn owl earned its name from nesting in barns, belfries, and other buildings,
as well as trees and caves. They also use appropriate nest boxes.
Barred owls have a spine tingling call; however, their calls also include
squeaks, screeches, barks, and yowls. In some areas this bird is known as
the crazy owl because of its erratic hooting. This owl is very curious and
has often left hiding to investigate owl watchers who have learned to imitate
some of its calls.
